How to Get Better Vacation Photos, No Selfie Stick Required

Jul 19, 2018

If you find yourself vacationing in Budapest, Hungary, you could preserve travel memories by taking a few arm-length, low-quality cellphone selfies that will fail to capture the magic of your visit. Or you could hire someone like Dana J. Ardell, a Budapest-based professional photographer who knows photo spots you'll never find in a guidebook and who can deliver stunning pictures — with your whole travel party in the shots. Ardell is a photographer with Flytographer , one of a growing number of online services that help travelers find and hire a photographer to take pictures of them during a vacation....

Hawaii searches for safe spots for people to see lava

Jul 19, 2018

HONOLULU — Stunning images of Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano have captivated people around the world. But ironically it's nearly impossible for residents and visitors on the ground to see the lava — a fact that's squeezing the tourism-dependent local economy. Authorities on the Big Island want to set up a lava viewing site to help, but they're finding it difficult to do while keeping people safe. The risks posed by the volcano came into sharp focus this week when lava flowing into the ocean triggered an explosion that sent a hot rock the size of a basketball crashing through the...

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin launches spacecraft higher than ever

Jul 19, 2018

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket company shot a capsule higher into space Wednesday than it's ever done before. The New Shepard rocket blasted off from West Texas on the company's latest test flight. Once the booster separated, the capsule's escape motor fired, lifting the spacecraft to an altitude of 389,846 feet. That's 74 miles or 119 kilometers. It's part of a safety system intended to save lives once space tourists and others climb aboard for suborbital hops. Wednesday's passenger was Mannequin Skywalker, an instrumented dummy in a blue flight suit that's flown before, plus science experiments....

Study: National parks get fewer visits when pollution rises

Jul 19, 2018

DENVER — Visitors appear to be steering clear of some U.S. national parks or cutting visits short because of pollution levels that are comparable to what's found in major cities, according to a study released Wednesday. Researchers at Iowa State and Cornell universities looked at more than two decades of data on ozone pollution at 33 parks — from Shenandoah to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. They say visitor numbers dropped almost 2 percent when ozone levels went up even slightly and by at least 8 percent in months with three or more days of high ozone levels compared...

Judge rules Michigan cafe owner won't be deported

Jul 19, 2018

HARBERT, Mich. — A Michigan restaurant owner from Turkey who has been facing deportation for more than a decade will now be allowed to stay in the U.S. Ibrahim Parlak learned Tuesday he was granted a deferral of removal under the Convention Against Torture, an international law protecting refugees from being returned under threat of torture or death. Immigration Judge Katheryn Deangelis ruled that Parlak's fear for his safety upon deportation to Turkey is well-founded. "There is only relief," Parlak told the Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph in a phone interview Tuesday. "These past few years have been a struggle." The...
