New Chipotle CEO plans menu 'tweaks,' and maybe drive-thrus

Apr 25, 2018

NEW YORK — The new CEO at Chipotle plans to make "simple menu tweaks," redesign its restaurants and expand its delivery service in the coming months. Another longer-term possibility: drive-thrus, which CEO Brian Niccol said are an "interesting proposition for Chipotle." Niccol didn't offer specifics on his plans, which he discussed for the first time Wednesday after joining the Denver-based company from Taco Bell last month. Wall Street analysts are eager to see how Niccol will put his stamp on Chipotle, which has long positioned itself as a step above fast food. His main job: bring customers back to Chipotle,...

Apr 25, 2018

NEW YORK — Even though "Fixer Upper" has come to an end, Joanna Gaines is still going strong. The designing half of the just-wrapped HGTV show is showcasing her cooking skills with the release of her "Magnolia Table" cookbook. She showcased tasty food made from the book's recipes at a recent lunch in New York as hubby Chip cracked jokes and playfully teased his pregnant wife while prepping biscuits in front of guests. The pair talked about the inspiration for the book, which was finding time to spend time together with their four children. "I just craved those moments around...

Weddings are stress factories for many a bride and groom

Apr 25, 2018

NEW YORK — Weddings are festive, but they're often mega-stressful for bride and groom. Multiply that by about a million and it's a wonder Meghan Markle is still upright as her May 19 royal nuptials crawl ever closer. Her prince, Harry, was born into "The Firm," but Markle is a newbie, so how does a high-profile bride like herself manage all that wedding pressure? She can approach her big day like the commoner she remains for the moment and seize some time for herself while she still can. Los Angeles psychologist Antonia Hall suggests brides block out 10- to 15-minute...

Tennis corruption report: 'Tsunami' of problems at low level

Apr 25, 2018

An independent review of corruption in tennis found that the sport "faces a serious integrity problem" at its lower levels — a "tsunami," according to one person interviewed — but did not determine there are widespread problems at ATP, WTA and Grand Slam tournaments. The report released Wednesday showed no cover-up by tennis' governing bodies of improper betting or match-fixing, although there were "errors made and opportunities missed," Adam Lewis, a member of the three-lawyer review panel, said at a news conference in London. Recommendations included putting an end to the International Tennis Federation's sale of official live scoring data...

Egypt's parliament passes law to fine aggressive touts

Apr 25, 2018

CAIRO — In efforts to revive its tourism sector, Egypt passed a bill this week imposing fines on overly aggressive touts. The law approved this week could see anyone found pestering tourists "with the intention of begging or promoting, offering or selling a good or service" fined up to 10,000 Egyptian pounds ($567). The legislation has still to be ratified by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. The news has already raised concerns among Egyptians working in the area of the famed pyramids at Giza, offering souvenirs, carriage or camel rides. Ahmed, one of the workers, said the bill will impact the...
