Mexicans approve president-elect's proposals in referendum

Dec 9, 2018

MEXICO CITY — Results released Monday show voters in Mexico approved all 10 pet projects of President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in a referendum questioned because of low turnout. Lopez Obrador has touted referendums as a way to give people power in determining policies, but critics say the latest process was hurt by the way the questions were worded, a lack of information and the fact that only about one in 90 registered voters participated. Lopez Obrador's most controversial plan, a train that would connect the main tourist attractions across the Yucatan Peninsula, had the highest level of rejection at...

White House pastry chefs make National Mall in gingerbread

Dec 9, 2018

WASHINGTON — The traditional White House gingerbread house isn't exactly a house this year. It's a massive, sugary replica of the entire National Mall. The pastry creation — featured at Monday's unveiling of the White House holiday decorations — required 225 pounds of dough, 25 pounds of chocolate and 20 pounds of white icing. It includes replicas of the Capitol, the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the Washington Monument and the White House, complete with tiny green wreaths with red ribbons on each window. White House pastry chefs have created gingerbread houses during the holidays since the early 1970s. The first...

Dec 9, 2018

CHICAGO — A wintry storm brought blizzard-like conditions to parts of the Midwest early Monday, grounding hundreds of flights and causing scores of accidents and at least one death on slick roads crowded with people returning from work after the Thanksgiving weekend. The Chicago area was slammed with up to a foot (30 centimeters) of wet snow, and whiteout conditions stalled commuter traffic on the roads. The National Weather Service said 7.5 inches (19 centimeters) of snow fell at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and 4.9 inches (12.5 centimeters) fell at Midway International Airport. The Chicago Department of Aviation says more...

Zimbabwe's Mugabe no longer able to walk, president says

Dec 9, 2018

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe's 94-year-old former president Robert Mugabe is no longer able to walk as his health declines, his successor said Saturday. President Emmerson Mnangagwa told ruling party supporters that Mugabe has been in a hospital in Singapore for the past two months. "He can no longer walk but we will continue to take care of him," said Mnangagwa, who took over from his former mentor a year ago after Mugabe stepped down under military pressure. Mugabe was the world's oldest head of state before his dramatic exit following 37 years in power, a period in which he led...
