Poor postural habits are recognized as one of the leading contributors to back pain. The article is comprised of two major sections, the first of which is a simple check of the current posture of the reader. The positioning of the feet, knees, buttocks, back, and shoulders is noted, as well as the construction of the chair in which the reader is sitting.
According to the article, the feet should be flat on the floor and the knees at a ninety-degree angle. The buttocks, shoulders, and back should be lined up against the chair's backrest. The chair should provide plenty of lumbar support, with the backrest fitting into the spine's natural curvature. The shoulders should not be hunched in a forward position, but rather even and relaxed. The body weight should be evenly distributed across both hips and the knees level with or slightly higher than the hips. A "No" answer to any of the factors may be an indication of excessive stress on the spine, eventually creating symptoms of back pain.
The article points out several other tips which will help in reducing back pain caused by improper posture. Moving around after forty minutes in the same position can be helpful. Standing up, stretching the back and legs, or taking a short walk can help to prevent chronic slouching. This bad posture can affect the intervertebral discs, causing them to bulge or become herniated.
