Get to know Emergency Physician Dr. Djiby Diop, who serves patients in Alabama.
New York City, New York Jan 20, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - Dr. Diop came to the United States of America at the age of 16 not speaking English, speaking only French and Wolof. He was quick to learn English and graduated from high school as a member of the national honor society. Despite his young age, Dr. Diop set a clear goal for himself which was to come to the United States, attend top schools, and study medicine. Dr. Diop received his Doctor of Medicine from the Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University an Ivy League where he combined his doctor of medicine degree with a master's degree from the Brown University graduate school in the division of biochemistry and pharmacology.
Dr. Diop then attended the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston where he earned a master's degree in public health from the division of Health Policy and Management. Dr. Diop did an Internal Medicine Internship at the Miriam Hospital Brown University and a full residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and a full residency in Emergency Medicine at Baystate Medical Center and is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine until 2028. Dr. Diop was appointed an emergency department physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard, Boston. He rose through the ranks in the field of Emergency Medicine from being a staff emergency department physician, Assistant Emergency Department Medical Director, Associate Emergency Department Medical Director, to Emergency Department Medical Director and then Chairman of the Emergency Department, Chairman of the Hospital Wide Clinical oversight committee. He was appointed as Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Emergency Department at Auburn University-VCOM Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Virginia, Carolinas, and Auburn, Alabama. He was Public Health Physician for the United Agency for International Development (USAID) in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa.
Throughout his career, Dr. Diop enjoyed the privilege and opportunity to mentor scribes some of whom he wrote their letter of recommendation to get into medical school, medical students, and nursing students some of whom he wrote their letters of recommendation to get them into nursing school. Dr. Diop also enjoys teaching and sharing his clinical experience with students, residents, young doctors, and colleagues.
Dr, Diop's mentoring experience started with his own children, a son who graduated from Harvard University in Boston, and a daughter who did her undergraduate studies at Columbia University, followed by her Medical School studies at Brown University that culminated with her doing her residency and fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and now has accepted a faculty position at the Massachusetts General Hospital / Brigham and Women Hospital at Harvard in Boston.
Dr. Diop believes that he is blessed by the good Lord and is an example of the American Dream he believes anyone can achieve that dream by setting a goal in life and pursuing it with perseverance, intellectual curiosity, discipline, and hard work.
Dr. Diop enjoys using his talent to give free lectures to the community as his contribution to community service, including lectures to senior circles, the rotary club, the chamber of commerce, Go Red for Women, and EMS personnel. He also enjoys giving lectures at the National and international level on cardiovascular disease and in Emergency Department Process Improvement and Optimization.
Dr. Diop enjoys patient care and enjoys sharing his experience through publication and teaching.
Dr. Diop received many awards and accolades including the Emergency Department Medical Director Award in Appreciation for 5 years of Outstanding Leadership, and EMS Medical Director of the year for East Alabama EMS to name but a few.
His next goal is to design the next generation of Emergency Departments where long waiting times, overcrowded emergency rooms, misdiagnoses, and iatrogenic medical errors will be eliminated, and where evidence-based practice tied to excellent customer service will guide the practice of emergency medicine.
