However, all that is changing as the FDA has approved both Mounjaro and Wegovy. These two medications are the most effective weight loss medication to be approved by the FDA. The clinical trials showed a 15-20% loss in patients’ body weights. With Mounjaro and Wegovy, weight loss will now become successful and effective.

Mounjaro is an injectable prescription medicine that is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. People taking Mounjaro lost up to 25 pounds in clinical trials. Mounjaro is not a weight loss drug but can produce rapid weight loss. Individual results may vary. ‡In studies with or without other diabetes medications, weight loss in adults ranged from 12 lbs. (5 mg) to 25 lbs. (15 mg).

The medicine works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in regulating appetite and food intake. This will help consumers eat less, which leads to weight loss. In a 68-week medical study of 1,961 adults living with obesity or excess weight with a related medical problem, adults lost ~35 lbs. (or ~15% body weight).

People taking a placebo lost an average of 6 lbs. (or ~2.5% of body weight). The average starting weight for both groups was ~232 lbs. Like Mounjaro, Wegovy is to be taken once a week, any time of the day, with or without food. Last, there is Ozempic®. It is a medicine for adults with type 2 diabetes that, along with diet and exercise, may improve blood sugar. While not for weight loss, Ozempic® may help a patient lose some weight.

During clinical trials, adults taking Ozempic® lost up to 14 pounds. Two other studies showed results summarized below:

●     Ozempic®: 8 lbs (0.5 mg) and 10 lbs (1 mg) vs placebo: 3 lb

●     Ozempic®: 12 lbs (1 mg) and 14 lbs (2 mg)

from an average starting weight of 202 lb and 219 lb, respectively.
