When 73-year-old Rosemina Hamzah stepped up to the hex bar at Singapore’s Mbold Seniors Hex Bar Deadlift Challenge in August, she was not just attempting her first deadlift competition – she was rewriting what ageing looks like. Latching onto 67.5kg (149lbs), more than her own body weight of 64kg, the novice lifter pulled it with ease – a personal best to win her category. It was a remarkable feat for a woman who, just over a year ago, could hardly walk and was constantly in pain. Before August...

Florals don’t have to mean full bloom. For spring/summer 2027, Shiatzy Chen takes the orchid but looks beyond its purely decorative appeal to the proportions, movement and resilience of the plant. Presented at Paris Fashion Week on October 5, the new collection translates that botanical inspiration into a thoughtful line-up where fluidity and structure come together. The season forms part of the house’s year-long exploration of the Four Gentlemen of Eastern culture. Following on from the Resort...

London-based private members’ wine club 67 Pall Mall is scheduled to open its first mainland China outpost in December, in Shanghai’s former French Concession. Founder Grant Ashton says the move reflects a global shift away from spirits – which can reach 40 per cent alcohol by volume (ABV) – towards wine, typically 12 to 14 per cent ABV. “Wine is halfway down to zero,” he says, mapping out the spectrum from spirits to non-alcoholic drinks. “If you’re starting from spirits, wine is your sweet...

Considering the number of tourists who visit every year, there aren’t many luxury hotels on Thailand’s Phi Phi Islands, possibly the result of stringent measures put in place in recent years to prevent overtourism. Outrigger Phi Phi Island Resort is thus a welcome new addition to the scene. Located on the northern tip of Phi Phi Don Island, the main island in the Phi Phi archipelago, this laid-back, unpretentious resort sits on the quiet shores of Laem Tong Beach, within a protected national...
Pope Leo XIV had a cancerous growth removed from his right lung in a 90-minute operation on Tuesday and "woke up normally" after the procedure, the Vatican said. A Vatican source said further tests were being carried out to determine if the cancer had spread. "To ensure the procedure was radical, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed," the Vatican said in a statement. FRANCE 24's Seema Gupta reports from Rome.
