When asked to comment Ms. Kolen explained, “Normally it’s highly probable we can resolve the tax issue a client has as well as reduce what the IRS is expecting to receive from them. I achieve this using a 3 step approach. “
1. Educate the Client
The first thing Kolen does is use her tax expertise to simplify the overall process of tax resolution for a client.
“I educate my clients who are going through tax difficulties, about their rights to contest any claims from the IRS and use a licensed representative to negotiate on their behalf” Ms. Kolen said.
One example given by Ms. Kolen is that clients don’t always know what to do after receiving a letter from the IRS. Kolen informs clients of their rights which include clients being allowed to send any letters to a enrolled agent – such as herself – who can “break it down into layman’s terms and respond to the IRS in a timely manner on their behalf.”
2. Get The Inside Scoop
Ms. Kolen also explained the next part of her process.
She pointed out that, “Quite often clients do not know why the IRS is targeting them.”
When asked to comment further, Ms. Kolen is quoted as saying, “It's imperative to find out why the IRS alleges that a client owes a tax debt or why they are auditing a client tax return in the first place.”
“Our team conducts thorough research and discovery so we can analyze the client's tax history. This step is crucial in gaining an advantage against the IRS claims and helps us to gain a clearer understanding of what is going on and draft a plan of action.” she said.
3. Plan of Action
Based on the information discovered in the research, Ms. Kolen and her team drafts a strategy that often leads to the client paying much less than what the IRS says they owe.
“Our secret weapon in this process involves an “Ability to Pay” analysis”, Kolen added.
When asked to elaborate, she said, “If we find that our client owes back taxes, we will run an ‘Ability to Pay’ analysis to see if they can pay the amount owed within the statute of limitations that the IRS has to collect a tax debt.”
Equipped with this information, Ms. Kolen then ensures her clients are compliant by negotiating on their behalf with the IRS to reach a “permanent tax resolution.”
This process has produced some impressive results for Kolen’s clients.
When asked to give an example, Ms. Kolen is quoted as saying, “By using the ‘Ability to Pay’ analysis, we were able to help one of our clients by negotiating $250,000 owed to the IRS down to only $2,700.”
