2020 Olympic medals to be made from recycled phones are as beautiful as ever.
February 7, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —
It used to be that the Olympic medals were made out of new metal, but that isn't the case for the 2020 Olympic medals. The Tokyo games are using medals that are made out of recycled phones. Even though the medals have changed in looks over the years, they have always contained the same basic elements. On one side of the medal there is a version of Nike, who is the Greek goddess of victory, ideal for an Olympic medal champion.
All of the gold medals have to contain a minimum of 6-grams of pure gold. The silver and bronze medals are made from a minimum 925-1000 grade metal. It used to be that the main elements were gathered from a contract with a mining corporation, but things are changing. During the Rio games, they started making things eco-friendlier. All medals were made with 30% recycled materials. However, that isn't the case with the 2020 games in Tokyo. They are eliminating the tradition entirely.
The Olympic games are appealing to the general public to get them to donate enough metal to be able to handle the demands for all 5,000 medals that are going to be awarded during the summer games. The goal is to be able to collect 8-tons of metal. Those 8-tons can be turned into the 2-tons needed to create the beautiful medals. Not only does the project allow residents to actively participate in creating the medals, but it helps save the planet at the same time.
Because there are a limited amount of resources available on the planet, being able to recycle anything out there can make a huge impact on the way things are handled. By doing away with the mining contract in exchange for going with a recycling effort, the 2020 games are going to be able to cut costs significantly. With a budget of $30M plus, it makes sense that everyone wants to do whatever it takes to save money.
EnviroSolutions Inc. is dedicated to helping improve the planet as much as possible. When individuals do their part to recycle old metals and products, it can go a long way in making a difference in how things are handled. There are numerous products that can be recycled today. Cell phones are just one of the options. Even small steps can make a world of difference in how many new products can be made.
