For the entire month of September, online retailer, Pretty Pieces, is supporting Ovarian Cancer Awareness by going teal. The support will include donations to the OCRFA (Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance), and a giveaway for women suffering from hair loss due to chemotherapy treatments for ovarian cancer. The winner will receive a full hair replacement unit courtesy of Pretty Pieces.
According to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance, “A woman’s lifetime risk of developing invasive ovarian cancer is 1 in 75; A woman’s lifetime risk of dying from invasive ovarian cancer is 1 in 100”. Nicole Banks, the owner of the online retail store, happens to be among the 1 out of 75 women that suffer from ovarian cancer, and she has decided to support other women like her in the fight against this devastating disease.
Nicole Banks was diagnosed of ovarian cancer 10 years ago at the age of 29, and this was the primary cause of her infertility problems, according to her. Her story is one of survival and provides great courage and encouragement to women in the same situation as her. Her blog contains more information about her and how she has managed to live a normal and fruitful life since the onset of the disease.
Aside from supporting the OCRFA, Nicole Banks will also assist in raising awareness of the disease through the launch of her Real Pretty Real Teal clothing collection. A portion of the proceeds from this new clothing collection will be donated to the OCFRA. As a result, it’s not just a one-off donation – the donations will continue for as long as the clothing collection keeps selling, and that could be forever.
Women interested in the giveaway can contact Pretty Pieces through their website to join the list of potential winners.

Opened in the 1950s, Sai Woo was a two-storey restaurant in Toronto’s Chinatown, with a traditional Chinese banquet hall on the upper floor. Designed for wedding celebrations, the space featured a canopy with two columns, a golden dragon entwined on one and a phoenix on the other. Lazy Susans sat atop the round banquet tables. Chinatown was also home to Charlie’s Meat and Seafood, a white-tiled butcher shop that opened in 1971. Inside was a glass display case filled with cuts of meat. On the...

In 1986, a strange coincidence occurred in Hollywood. Despite the industry having previously shown little interest in the subject, two major Chinese-themed fantasy films were released in the same year: John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China and the Eddie Murphy vehicle The Golden Child. Ever the cynic, Carpenter refused to believe in serendipity. “How many adventure pictures dealing with Chinese mysticism have been released by the major studios in the past 20 years?” he asked Starlog...
