Practical Psychology Offers Free Memory Test

Nov 10, 2022

November 10, 2022 - /PressAdvantage/ - Practical Psychology, composed of psychology graduates who operate the PracticalPie.com website, has recently released an online tool that serves as a memory test that can be taken for free. They want to point out that this online test has already helped more than 10,000 people. It was developed by Theodore Thudium and is the first and only 3-in-1 memory test that is capable of measuring short-term, long-term, and working memory through a quiz that can be completed in less than 5 minutes.

For the short-term memory test, the user is shown several digits of numbers and then asked to remember them. The numbers are then removed from the screen, and the user is asked to type the numbers. The test becomes more difficult as the user is asked to memorize more digits until the user begins to forget the digits. Studies have shown that the average short-term memory can hold 5 to 9 digits. Short-term memory typically doesn’t last for more than 18 seconds, unless rehearsed.

Meanwhile, long-term memory is information that is stored and then retrieved for longer than a few minutes. In this particular memory test, animal images are used to test the person’s visual memory by showing three animals at first and then asking the user to remember the same three animals at the end. There are two kinds of long-term memory, and they are: implicit and explicit. In this test, people are asked to use their explicit memory using animal images.

Working memory is the capacity of a person to use, manipulate and do complex tasks on letters, numbers, and items. The test employs three ways of testing working memory. The first one is the N-back test, where the user is asked to memorize a list of numbers. The test will then ask for the number that appeared “N” numbers ago. This part of the test is a bit more challenging, and some test-takers may actually not understand the function.

Another method used in the test to determine working memory is the calculation test. First, the user is given a few numbers. The user will not only need to remember those numbers but also manipulate them. For instance, the user may be asked to add 10 to each of those numbers. The difficulty of the calculation test can be increased by requesting the user to do several calculations, using more numbers, or larger numbers.

Another method used for testing working memory is the rotation task. The user is asked to do mental rotations within their visuospatial sketchpad. Some people find this task easy while others consider it to be difficult.

Memory loss can happen in a lot of ways, from simply forgetting where one left the car keys to not being able to remember a certain person’s name, all the way to not recognizing family members or forgetting how to get home. Memory loss occurs when the brain is unable to locate a certain piece of information stored in memory. One of the typical causes of memory loss is age, but there are other possible reasons. Causes of memory loss that aren’t permanent can almost always be effectively managed including lack of sleep, medication, alcohol consumption, stress and/or anxiety, depression, and underactive or overactive thyroid. Meanwhile, significant and long-term memory loss can be caused by various things such as stroke, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury, and dementia. There are various kinds of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, Huntington’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and more.

The treatment for memory loss will depend on the exact cause. In most cases, the cause is non-permanent, and the treatment could be as simple as changing one’s behavior that is causing the memory loss. For instance, if it is being caused by lack of sleep, it may be advisable to establish a better routine of going to bed and then waking up in the morning. For anxiety, stress, depression, or a thyroid problem, medical treatment may be provided by a doctor.

For age-related memory loss, keeping the mind and body active can help improve memory, or at least slow down the effect of aging on memory. Currently, there is no treatment for memory loss due to dementia, but some things can be done to manage the condition.

Those who are interested in taking the free memory test can head out to the PracticalPie.com website. Those who have questions can call them on the phone or contact them via email.

How Mid-Autumn Festival lanterns are traditionally made and an artisan defending the craft
