Public humiliation for Northampton bosses… if an employee loses their mobile

Jan 25, 2018

Northampton computer repair company warns of the consequences of losing customer data as the new GDPR law is due to come into place soon.

Northampton, United Kingdom - January 24, 2018 /PressCable/ —

Northampton businesses could face public humiliation and huge fines for losing valuable data – if one of their employees does something as simple as lose their mobile phone.

That’s the warning from Peter Ravi, owner of local IT support and computer repair company, Proactive IT Support Ltd. https://fastproactiveit.com/

“It’s all because of a trend called Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD,” explained Peter.

“Most businesses round here let their staff access company data using their own phone, and sometimes their own iPad or laptop. But the business’s boss remains liable for protecting company data.”

“And if a device is lost without adequate protection, it can mean your data is open anyone.”

“Letting staff use their own mobile devices or computers for work might seem more convenient and cost effective initially but in the long term it has its own problems. Experience has shown that personal computers are not as well virus protected as company computers and tend to have excessive and unnecessary applications loaded. Many of these non work applications could introduce a security risk if the device is attached to a company network allowing for the spread of viruses and data corruption. This practice is not allowed in most larger and blue-chip companies.”

Peter added: “From May this year there are new GDPR data laws coming in. The loss of an employee’s mobile phone with company data would have to be reported to the Information Commissioner.

“That loss of data would sit in the public record. People Googling your business might see your data loss before they even get to your website. There are also big potential fines.”

Peter has written a free guide on the subject. It explores the six BYOD data security areas to be most concerned about… and what to do to mitigate them.

History of mooncake moulds and their designs, and those preserving the craft

As symbolic of the Mid-Autumn Festival as the legend of Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit, mooncakes have a history dating back centuries, with their first mention during the Song dynasty (960-1279) in author Wu Zimu’s Dreaming of Grain. Early mooncakes were a far cry from the creative and intricate designs we see today. The rudimentary cakes were flat and round, with a thin outer crust and fillings such as lotus seed paste or the auspicious five kernels. During the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368),...

HERITAGE MONTH: CELEBRATING SOUTH AFRICA’S EVOLVING CUISINES

If it’s September, it’s Heritage Month in South Africa. A time when the traditions, stories and values that shape our shared identity fall under the spotlight. And for many, few things say heritage quite like food. It sits at the heart of any celebration, bringing us together around the dishes we cook, share and pass on. So, what does South African heritage taste like? Ask ten people, and you may get ten different answers. Pap and morogo. A Durban curry. Potjiekos. Bobotie. Vetkoek. Koeksisters. Perhaps the unmistakable smell and taste of a braai.

‘I wasn’t scared’: young Hong Kong rare cancer survivor who stayed positive

When Kevin Cureau first spoke to his oncologist about the mass behind his knee, he was not stressed out. “It was more, ‘Oh, this is just something I have to get through.’ I wasn’t scared or anything,” says Cureau, 37, a French-Chinese cancer survivor born and living in Hong Kong who was diagnosed with stage-three liposarcoma in late 2025. Cureau took the news so calmly that even his doctor was a little surprised. But he admits that, at the time, he did not fully understand what liposarcoma was....

Milan Fashion Week: Prada spring/summer 2027 spotlights the skirt, the brand’s ‘obsession’

If there’s a garment that has come to define Prada – both the brand and the personal style of designer Miuccia Prada – it has to be the skirt. Back in 2005, the brand held a blockbuster exhibition at the Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Named “Waist Down”, the show was a celebration of the skirt, a closet staple that was also the centrepiece of the label’s spring/summer 2027 collection, unveiled on Tuesday at Milan Fashion Week. In the show notes, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, who co-design Prada,...

Manga mania: how Japanese comics conquered the world

“The Japanese are thrilled by the growing appreciation for manga around the world – that it’s now read from Saudi Arabia to France to the US – and all at the same time,” enthuses Nicole Rousmaniere, founder of the UK’s Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures at the University of East Anglia. “Manga is becoming a universal language.” Certainly the distinctive imagery of the Japanese graphic novel tradition is increasingly finding its way from page to museum wall....
