The farmers at Waseda Farms are finding new ways to get food to clients.
Matt Lutsey, president of Waseda Farms, said “Our Farm Market Store in De Pere Wisconsin has been inundated since the pandemic began. Since supermarkets and grocery stores were selling out fast, Waseda Farms is among the largest organic farms in Wisconsin. As such, it can increase production to help satisfy demand” The Waseda Farms Market Store has been keeping up with demand by regular deliveries direct from the organic farms in Baileys harbor.
Lutsey explained that to meet the unprecedented demand for meat the Waseda Farms online store has expanded, and people can now download shopping lists for local pick at De Pere and Baileys Harbor and email their order, this includes other locally produced non-meat produce that is not suitable for online shopping.
The farm has a localized shortage of farm staff due to the increased demand for organic meat products.
Waseda also operates an onsite market that sells dairy, produce, and other grocery items. As the country began to shut down in March, the company saw that another option would be needed. The farms adapted their platforms to move to curbside pick up, online ordering, and phone orders. They found that their business increased over 30% within the first few weeks and estimated that about one-quarter of that number is a new business. People are coming from as far as Oshkosh and Appleton.
Waseda Farms is known for organic grass-fed meats, and it’s finishing work (on the meats). There is a uniqueness to the farms, as it also raises its animals.
The company’s attention to detail and reputation is important because so many larger operations are having outbreaks of the virus and need to shut down.
“We cut every steak and grind all the ground beef,” explains the president and owner, Matthew Lutsey. He states that he and his team are “consciously concerned” about coronavirus and pay more attention to safety and cleaning. Their methods, already in place, haven’t had to change much.
Lutsey describes how “inspectors love to use [Waseda Farms] as a model for how other small-scale operations should run . . . clean, neat, and tidy. We’re proud of that.”
